Metal Sheds
Metal sheds are usually made from steel or aluminum, both of which make metal shed buildings light in weight and sturdy in strength. The look of metal sheds tends to be plain and un-pretentious. Most people choose metal sheds for their durability, ease of construction and cheap cost of materials.
Because metal is so malleable, you can get a metal shed in all types of different shapes and sizes. They come as fully assembled sheds, DIY kits, metal pole barns, portable sheds, vertical sheds and even horizontal sheds if your yard has height restrictions. Most metal sheds tend to have either a straight roof or a V-Shaped roof. Many metal sheds also come with pre-fabricated metal shelving.
One of the main reasons for choosing a metal shed is that they last a long time and they don’t require too much maintenance. They are generally much cheaper than wooden sheds. If you have looked around already you will see that they have some very favorable prices. Not only are metal sheds cheaper than wood sheds, they also require less time to erect, especially if they are pre-cut or pre-fabricated.
Prefabricated metal buildings are metal sheds that are pre-cut to size at the factory and come in easy to assemble sheets. Prefabricated storage sheds are the half-way step between the fully assembled sheds and the start-from-scratch build it yourself type of shed. Unless you are well equipped with metal working tools and knowledge, you would be best sticking with a pre-fab or fully assembled metal shed.
Metal sheds are generally safer than wooden sheds. Unlike wood, steel and aluminum isn’t flammable, so this makes metal sheds the ideal solution for hay sheds, barns and any other storage sheds where combustible material will be stored.
Metal is also bug-resistant. Termites aren’t a problem with metal sheds. So if you live in a termite-prone area, a metal construction might be a better alternative.
Although metal sheds do not necessarily require foundations, placement of metal sheds should always be on high ground for good drainage, not on any low wet areas.
One of the disadvantages of metal sheds is their susceptibility to corrosion. Although the metal materials are treated for corrosion and rust in the factory, if you live in an area that is near the coast, or an area of high humidity, you should be aware that rust will be a major factor in the life of a metal shed.
Another hazard to consider with metal sheds is the heat generated inside the shed itself. Metal may not be combustible but it sure can generate heat. Make sure you carefully consider what you will store inside a metal shed or steel storage building. This is especially important where any animals or livestock are concerned.
If you are considering a DIY shed or prefabricated building then you should also be aware that these type of steel buildings can contain extremely sharp edges in the prefabricated panels. If you are considering building any type of metal shed please be careful around children.
