Prefab Sheds

Feb 02, 2008 @ 08:19 pm by Jim Carnegie

If you have little confidence in your ability to build a shed or storage building from scratch, then prefabricated buildings could be the solution for you. These days you can get prefabricated greenhouses, prefabricated steel buildings, prefab garden sheds, prefabricated garages, prefabricated barns and even prefabricated offices!!!

A prefabricated building or prefab building basically comes in a kit either partially or fully assembled. This makes the DIY sheds and storage very easy to install. Prefab sheds can be made from wood, metal or even vinyl. The choice is yours and you can even have the prefab building installed by a contractor if you choose. This is particularly good for people who are not confident in their handyman skills or who are short on time. Also if you decide to get a contractor to install your shed they would be responsible for any repairs.

Prefabricated storage sheds include precut materials such as floor joists, floor deck, floor plates, roof panels, wall studs, wall plates, stud and angle brackets, prefabricated trusses and more.

The advantage of prefab buildings is that they can decrease labour and time costs. This means that you save both dollars and time. However you will still need elementary carpentry skills to install the shed kit yourself. Prefabricated steel buildings are pre drilled, pre punched and pre welded at the factory saving you lots of time at the installation end.

There is a wide variety of prefab shed and DIY shed kits available, in different shapes and sizes. Small sheds have single doors and limited headroom, whilst larger sheds have double doors. You can choose from a variety of roof and window styles and different price categories. Some companies will even create a design for you. You just have to send them your sketches, dimensions and specifications. They will then provide you with a custom designed pre-cut shed kit. This will incur an additional fee but is great if you want something unique to your property and tastes.

Before you decide on any prefabricated storage building, make sure that you check your local zoning restrictions and city codes to make sure it will be compliant.

Prefab sheds kits are available online, in home centers, some department stores, hardware stores, carpentry stores and discount stores.

When buying a prefab shed make sure you check the quality of the materials. If you are buying wood, then the wood should be pressure treated to ensure that it is stronger and decreases insect infiltration. If you decide to go with a steel shed kit, then the steel should be hot dipped galvanized steel to get maximum durability.

Vinyl (PVC) shed kits are the easiest to install and are very durable. The only disadvantage of these types of storage is that they are very light and can be blown away in heavy wind gusts. Prefabricated metal sheds are the most durable type of shed if the metal is rustproof. They can also be difficult to assemble as there are many types of screws that only fit in particular holes – thus requiring patience and time. Prefab wood shed kits are the most expensive with pricing depending on the type of wood used. Also as the wood is a heavy material the sizes of wooden sheds can be limited in a prefab kit. The weight of the shed kit will also affect shipping costs if ordering online or from the factory.
