PVC Sheds

Feb 02, 2008 @ 08:15 pm by Jim Carnegie

A polyvinyl chloride (PVC) shed, also known as plastic or vinyl shed, is the cheapest storage solution to modern storage needs. These sheds can come in many different colors and styles making it very easy for you to match your existing décor. The great thing about vinyl sheds is that they never lose their look and are practically maintenance free.

Perhaps the greatest advantage of plastic sheds is how easy they are to assemble. When you purchase a vinyl shed kit it is just a matter of following the instructions and you will soon have the shed assembled. The only tool you really need is a screwdriver and if you have basic carpentry skills you will be able to assemble the kit in no time. Because the vinyl is so light in weight, the prefab kits are also light and easy to install.

There are plenty of vinyl storage solutions to choose from, including garden buildings, plastic storage sheds, vinyl carports and you can even get PVC gazebos. These are a great solution because unlike wood, vinyl doesn’t rot, it is not susceptible to termites, it doesn’t split or crack and it won’t rust. This durability also makes vinyl less susceptible to scratches and dents. It will retain the same look year round and does not require painting. In terms of maintenance a simple “once a year” wash is all that is usually required.

If you do choose a vinyl storage shed you need to be aware of any external factors such as lawnmowers or bikes or other tools that could crack the plastic. You just need to take that little bit of extra care because the vinyl is light in weight and won’t take kindly to you running into it with the lawnmower! Also be careful of its potential to melt when it is placed near barbecues and fires. It’s best to keep these right away from the location of your shed.

Vinyl storage sheds are very durable and offer great protection in almost all weather conditions. Unlike metal they don’t heat up inside as much, they certainly don’t rust, and unlike wood termites stay well clear of them. They are especially cost effective for smaller storage solutions such as garden and bicycle sheds.

Vinyl sheds are usually designed around a steel metal frame. You can sometimes find that you don’t need a foundation for a plastic shed you may be able to get away with no foundation. Make sure you check your local zoning or city codes. If you find that you need to have a concrete foundation, you can order one with the prefab shed kit.

If the ground on which you are placing your pvc shed is slightly uneven (up to 6 inches along the site) then you may also get away with using brick pavers as the foundation.

One thing to keep in mind is anchoring the shed. The main disadvantage with vinyl sheds is that the light weight of the PVC can lead to them blowing away in strong gusts of wind. Most prefabricated shed kits come with an anchoring kit.
